Trusted advice from the RNLI and HM Coastguard. Before kids hit the water, make sure the whole family knows these essential safety rules.
Know Your Flags
Red and yellow flags = safe swimming zone. Black and white chequered flags = surf and craft zone, never swim here. A red flag means dangerous conditions — do not enter the water. An orange windsock means offshore or strong winds.
Choose a Lifeguarded Beach
Always visit a lifeguarded beach and follow lifeguard instructions. RNLI lifeguards are trained to spot dangers. Check local patrol times before you travel.
Float to Live
If you get into difficulty, stay calm and float on your back. Tilt your head back, keep your ears submerged, and wave for help. Do not swim against a rip current.
Never Swim Alone
Children should never swim or surf alone. Always surf with a mate, tell someone on shore where you are going and when you expect to be back.
Check Weather and Tides
Before you set out, check the local forecast for wind, swell, and tide. Conditions change quickly on UK beaches. Ask a lifeguard about rip currents.
Wear the Right Wetsuit & Leash
An appropriate wetsuit keeps kids warm and protects from scrapes. Always wear a leash when surfing so you do not get separated from your board.
In an Emergency, Call 999 or 112
Ask for the Coastguard. If you see someone in trouble at the coast, do not enter the water yourself — call for help immediately.
