Beach Days Aren’t Cancelled! Even though Summer is now over…
There is something about the end of summer that makes people think the beach season is finished. The evenings get shorter. The mornings feel cooler. The summer crowds disappear and suddenly a trip to the coast can feel like something you need a reason to do.
But the beach hasn’t gone anywhere.

Autumn Gold
In fact, autumn can be one of the best times of year to enjoy the coast. The sea is still relatively warm after the summer months, beaches are quieter, the landscape changes dramatically and there are plenty of reasons to get outside, whether you’re surfing, bodyboarding, paddleboarding, walking, exploring rock pools or simply enjoying some fresh sea air.
The trick is to change your approach rather than putting your beach gear away until next summer.

Autumn Doesn’t Mean You Have to Stop Going to the Beach
For families, the beach is often associated with warm sand, swimming costumes, ice creams and long days in the sunshine.
But coastal adventures don’t have to depend on hot weather.
Autumn brings its own atmosphere. There can be bigger swells for surfers and bodyboarders, interesting wind conditions for watersports and dramatic skies that make even a simple walk along the beach feel like an adventure.
The Key Difference is Preparation.
As temperatures drop, having the right clothing, towels, footwear and spare layers becomes much more important. If you’re getting into the water, think about what you’ll need before, during and after your session rather than simply what you’re wearing while you’re in the sea.

The Sea Doesn’t Suddenly Become Freezing
One of the misconceptions about autumn is that the sea temperature immediately drops as soon as September arrives.
It doesn’t work quite like that.
The ocean changes temperature more slowly than the air because water has a much greater capacity to store heat. That means the sea can remain surprisingly comfortable even when the air temperature has started to fall.
Of course, water temperature varies considerably depending on location, weather, wind, tides and time of year. Conditions should always be checked before heading out.
And remember that air temperature and water temperature are two very different things.
A sunny autumn afternoon can feel warm on the beach while the water remains significantly colder. Equally, a breezy day can make getting changed or standing around on the beach feel much colder than expected.
Make the Most of Quieter Beaches
Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of autumn is simply having more space.
The busiest summer beaches can become dramatically quieter once the school holidays finish. For families, this can make getting into watersports feel less stressful.
There is often more room to practise.
Kids can paddle, bodyboard or surf without feeling like they’re surrounded by hundreds of people. Adults can enjoy a quieter session. And for anyone learning a new watersport, having a little more space can make a huge difference.
Just remember that quieter beaches don’t necessarily mean safer beaches.
Always check local conditions, tides, weather and any relevant beach safety information before entering the water.
Autumn Is About Layers
One of the easiest ways to make cooler beach days more enjoyable is to stop thinking about clothing as one big decision.
Instead, think in layers.
A base layer can help keep you comfortable underneath your outer clothing. A warm changing layer or jacket can make a huge difference once you’re out of the water, while hats, gloves and warm footwear can become increasingly useful as temperatures fall.
For children especially, having warm clothes waiting for them after a session can make the difference between wanting to stay at the beach and demanding to go home immediately.

A good beach bag therefore changes with the seasons.
Think:
- Warm layers
- Spare clothes
- Plenty of towels
- Waterproof bags for wet kit
- Hats and gloves when appropriate
- Suitable footwear
- Drinks
- Snacks
- A windproof outer layer
- Your usual safety essentials
And never underestimate the value of a flask of something warm.
Know When to Get Out
Summer encourages us to stay in the water for longer.
Autumn requires a little more judgement.

You might start a session feeling perfectly comfortable but become progressively colder as time passes. Children can be particularly absorbed in what they’re doing and may not realise how chilled or tired they’re becoming.
Pay attention to behaviour.
If someone is becoming unusually quiet, shivering heavily, struggling to get changed, becoming clumsy or simply looking exhausted, it’s time to warm up rather than squeezing in another wave.
There is nothing wrong with ending a session early.
Sometimes the best decision is getting everyone changed, warm and fed before heading home with the promise of another session another day.
Don’t Forget the Simple Stuff
A great autumn beach day doesn’t have to involve a complicated watersports session.
Take a walk.
Collect shells.
Explore rock pools where conditions and local guidance make it safe.
Go bodyboarding.

Bodyboards & skimboards
Take the kids for a paddle.
Watch the surfers.
Take a camera.
Build something in the sand.
Or simply sit on the beach and watch the sea.
The coast changes constantly, and autumn often reveals details that are easy to miss during the height of summer.
The light changes. The waves change. The wind changes. Wildlife can become more noticeable. The beaches become quieter.
The experience changes with the season.

Autumn Beach Days Can Be Better Than Summer Ones
Summer will always have its appeal.
But there’s something satisfying about standing on a beach in September or October, watching the waves roll in while most people have already gone home for the year.
For surfers and watersports enthusiasts, autumn can mark the beginning of a completely different part of the season.
For families, it can be an opportunity to show children that the coast isn’t somewhere you only visit when the sun is shining.
And that’s perhaps the biggest lesson.

Beach days aren’t cancelled because summer is over.
They simply require a little more preparation.
Check the conditions. Dress appropriately. Take warm layers. Know your limits. Keep an eye on the kids. And most importantly, don’t let a change in temperature stop you from enjoying the coast.
The sea is still there.
The beach is still there.
There’s still plenty of adventure waiting.
