NCW Ocean Readiness Score

The NCW Ocean Readiness Score has been designed to help surfers, swimmers, paddleboarders, kayakers, watersports enthusiasts and coastal visitors quickly understand today’s conditions before heading to the beach.

By combining important environmental factors including sea temperature, air temperature, wind, waves and weather, the tool provides a simple readiness score along with guidance on comfort levels, suitable activities and wetsuit recommendations.

However, the accuracy of any ocean conditions tool depends entirely on the quality and freshness of the information it uses.

Accurate, Up-To-Date Ocean Data Matters

Ocean conditions can change quickly. A forecast from earlier in the day may no longer reflect what is actually happening at the beach.

For the most useful and realistic results, the NCW Ocean Readiness Score should be used alongside accurate, up-to-date information including:

  • Current surf and swell conditions
  • Latest wind speed and direction
  • Current weather conditions
  • Recent sea temperature readings
  • Local tide times and tidal movements

Wind, tide and swell especially can transform a coastline within hours. A sheltered beach can become exposed, waves can increase, offshore winds can create hazards, and strong currents can develop as tides change.

Always check local conditions before entering the water and use the most recent information available. These useful resources will help –

The Ocean Readiness Score Is A Guide – Not A Guarantee

The NCW Ocean Readiness Score provides a quick overview of the likely conditions, but it cannot account for every factor found in the ocean.

Your own judgement, experience level, fitness, equipment and knowledge of the local area are all important.

Conditions that are suitable for an experienced surfer may not be suitable for a beginner paddleboarder. A calm-looking sea can still contain powerful currents, while a warm sunny day can still hide cold-water risks.

The tool should always be used as part of your preparation, not as a replacement for local knowledge, official forecasts or sensible decision making.

It might look idyllic but the ocean can have hidden dangers

Understanding Cold Shock Risk

Cold water can be dangerous, even for confident swimmers and experienced watersports users.

When you enter cold water, your body can experience an involuntary cold shock response. This can cause:

  • A sudden gasp reflex
  • Rapid breathing
  • Increased heart rate
  • Panic or loss of control
  • Difficulty swimming effectively

Cold shock can happen even in relatively mild water temperatures, particularly if you enter suddenly or are not acclimatised.

Water temperature is one of the biggest factors affecting comfort and safety, which is why the NCW Ocean Readiness Score includes wetsuit guidance based on sea temperature.

General guidance:

  • Below 8ยฐC: 5/4mm winter wetsuit recommended, with boots, gloves and hood often advisable.
  • 8โ€“12ยฐC: 5/4mm wetsuit recommended for cold-water sessions.
  • 13โ€“16ยฐC: 4/3mm wetsuit suitable for many UK watersports.
  • 17โ€“20ยฐC: 3/2mm wetsuit recommended for most summer sessions.
  • 21ยฐC+: Lightweight wetsuit options or summer equipment may be suitable depending on activity and personal preference.

Remember: cold tolerance varies significantly between individuals.

Rip Currents: The Hidden Ocean Hazard

Rip currents are one of the most common hazards found at beaches around the world.

A rip is a strong channel of water moving away from the shoreline, often caused by waves pushing water towards the beach and that water needing to return back out to sea.

Signs of a possible rip include:

  • A darker channel of water heading away from shore
  • A gap between breaking waves
  • Foam or debris moving steadily offshore
  • A calmer-looking section between areas of breaking waves

If you are caught in a rip:

  1. Stay calm
  2. Do not try to swim directly against it
  3. Float and conserve energy
  4. Swim parallel to the beach until free from the current
  5. Then make your way back towards shore

If you are unsure about conditions, ask a lifeguard or choose another location.

If In Doubt, Don’t Go Out

The ocean is incredibly rewarding, but it deserves respect.

Before entering the water always consider:

  • Is the weather suitable?
  • Is the wind appropriate for my activity?
  • Are the waves and currents manageable?
  • Do I have the right equipment?
  • Am I wearing the right wetsuit?
  • Am I confident in these conditions?
  • Am I going with someone else?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, it may be better to wait for another day.

If in doubt, don’t go out.
