Surfing during Christmas and New Year was the topic of this previous blog post. This time around, we’re chatting about surfing from a weather point of view.

A Change Coming?
Recently, there’s been lots of speculation about how the UK’s weather will pan out during teh festive season. Increasingly, there are signals from forecast models that the current run of wet, windy and mild (ish) weather will transition to colder, crisper and drier conditions.
At the time of writing, this looks like it might actually come to fruition. Check out the Long Range Met Office forecast here

Christmas Surfing Waves – The Best Present
As we head towards Christmas, many surfers are keeping a close eye on the weather charts and dreaming of festive sessions in the sea. Right now, much of the UK – including Cornwall – is experiencing fairly typical early winter conditions. It’s wet, windy and relatively mild, with frequent Atlantic systems rolling through. While this kind of weather can bring plenty of swell, it often comes with messy conditions that make scoring clean waves a challenge.

However, there are encouraging signs that a change in the pattern could arrive over the festive period. Forecasts are beginning to suggest a shift away from dominant westerly winds, with breeze arrows turning more easterly as we move towards Christmas and into the New Year. For many Cornish surf spots, easterly winds are offshore, helping to groom incoming swells and create cleaner, more organised waves.
Watch Those Air Temperatures Though
Alongside the wind change, temperatures are expected to drop, with colder air moving in and a generally drier feel to the weather. While this means chillier mornings and frosty car parks, it could also mean more settled conditions overall.
Fewer weather fronts and lighter winds increase the chances of those crisp winter days that every surfer hopes for – clear skies, glassy seas and well-shaped waves breaking along the Cornish coastline.

Colder Weather Surfing Challenges
The colder conditions do, of course, bring their own challenges. Sea temperatures in the UK are already on the decline and will continue to fall as winter progresses. Add in colder air temperatures and wind chill, and good cold-water protection becomes essential. This is where investing in a quality wetsuit really pays off.
A well-fitted winter wetsuit from North Coast Wetsuits can make all the difference, keeping you warm, flexible and comfortable so you can stay in the water longer and make the most of any good surf that arrives.

Don’t Forget Those Thermal Rash Vests and Boots!
In addition to a high-quality wetsuit, winter surfing accessories are a must. Wetsuit boots help protect your feet from cold water and rocky reefs, while gloves and hoods reduce heat loss and allow you to focus on your surfing rather than the cold.
