Surfing & watersports equipment – the importance of having the right kit.

Surfing and watersports, as with all things, require specific equipment. When you learn you’re given a surfboard and wetsuit that’ll get you through those initial stages. As you progress, however, it becomes more important to be riding and using the right gear for what you’re attempting to achieve.

The surfboard conundrum.

When choosing a new surfboard you need to be brutally honest with yourself for starters. Where will you mainly be riding? What are the waves generally like? Does your personal surfing skill level fit the former? And so on. it’s o good choosing a ‘stick’ designed for making big waves when your everyday surf sessions consist of crumbly summer swells. Which can be par for the course through high season in the UK.

If you’re really struggling to ascertain what surfboard you need to be using then a trip to your local surf shop or surfboard shaper should set you on the right path. Beware of basing your decision on dimensions alone. And avoid opinion without basis. There are far too many ‘reviews’ without basis or experience. Talk to reputable sources rather than just your mates.

What about wetsuits for surfing and watersports?

Wetsuits – or rather, getting hold of a quality, well manufactured, fit for purpose wetsuit – is as important as choosing the right surfboard. If you’re not adequately protected in the brine (particularly in the UK) then your surfing and watersports experience with be all the poorer.

A wetsuits needs to be well fitting, allow freedom of movement as well as keep you warm. It should be the right thickness, based on its seasonality of use, and provide longevity. Wetsuits that fall apart after a few wears aren’t the best. Not least for the environment.

Having been passed equipment that’s better suited to the rider’s skill and conditions they suddenly begin enjoying a more fulfilling session. Everything is all at one smiles and grins. Fun is elevated and that familiar surfing feeling of stoke sets in. You can see the revelation on the rider in question’s face.

If you want your surfing life to be all smiles then the right gear – including what wetsuit you wear – is key.

‘Why didn’t I try something like this sooner?’ (Or words to that effect is usually the response).
