Indian summer end 2023 – making the most of early autumn surf.

Indian summer, technically, occurs after an autumnal cold spell. So whilst it’s not specifically an Indian Summer we’re getting at the moment (with highs of 28C in some locations) we’ll describe it as that. Shoot the messenger if you will… But we digress. If we’re on for an ‘Indian Summer’ then it’s certainly a shame not to make the most of things. Especially as far as the surf goes.

Ealy autumn surf.

As we write (Tues Sept 5, 2023) our local beach (Polzeath) is seeing groomed offshore 2-3ft sets pulsing in under a blazing sun. It really does look idyllic. Plus, crowds are much thinner than a few weeks back during high summer. We can’t guarantee this all the time but early to middle of autumn can often see a raft of belting surf sessions going down such as this. So definitely make sure you make the most of it if you can.

Fingers crossed for plenty of this during autumn 2023!

Further into autumn, the weather will definitely go cooler. But, again, we’ll hopefully be blessed by Mother Nature and score some good waves.

Is Indian Summer continuing into October 2023?

This is a tricky one as there’s some uncertainty, as the Met Office long range weather prediction suggests below –

Some uncertainty surrounds the specifics of the forecast for mid-to late September, but it is possible that the end of the month may be slightly drier than usual as there are indications for more high pressure affecting the country than normal. Though this could lead to some dry spells, periods of rain of showers are also possible. Temperatures are generally likely to be above average for the time of year, and there is a chance that parts of the country may see some very warm spells.’

Who doesn’t love a bit of sunshine with their watersports?

If this does come good then we could be on for a bumper weather and surf period this autumn. Fingers, toes and everything else crossed for this we say!

Other watersports.

But it doesn’t just stop with surfing. For those who like to swing a paddle – ala stand up paddle board mode – you too could be in for a treat. After all, SUP surfing is a thing. And if you prefer flat water then there’ll be good periods of weather for that too, all being well.

A warm autumn can be great for kids still keen to get wet.

Wild swimmers, kayakers and fringe surfers should all keep their ears to the ground because of how well autumn 2023 is shaping up. We don’t want to jinx things but it’s going in the right direction so far.
