School holidays imminent! Get your summer watersports kit sorted now…

School summer holidays are imminent – in case you missed that. In fact, some kids are already breaking up as we write. And with summer holidays comes the annual sojourn to UK coastal locations (such as Cornwall) as well as jetting off abroad. The question is: do you have your watersports gear sorted for high season?

Summer 2023 so far.

As it stands we haven’t been doing too badly in the sunshine front this summer. Temperatures at times have also been decent. There’s low pressure currently in charge (as of July 4, 2023). But it looks as though the warmth will return soon (according to long range forecasts).

Sunny summer sun hasn’t been too bad so far in 2023.

Sea thermometer readings are also high. There’s a little more to go in terms of getting waters to their highest temperatures. But we’re not far off. As we head into silly season proper there’s plenty of reason to head for the beach.

School holidays wetsuit choices.

With warmth – air and sea – there’s plenty of reason to shed the rubber. But, in almost all scenarios surfers, paddle boarders, windsurfers, belly boarders, kayakers and general beach frolickers will need some form of protection.

Shorties can be good wetsuit choices when it’s warm.

The UK’s weather is volatile, as well know. Conditions can change quickly. And you don’t want to be caught out with inappropriate water wear. Boardies and bikinis are great but do remember what happens if the wind chill increases.

And what about overseas school holidays?

When travellers head abroad they’re mainly doing so because of guaranteed heat. Whilst you mightn’t need rubbery wetsuit protection in the Med, for instance, there’s the point about protecting yourself from strong UV rays.

Even if you’re heading overseas NCW has the right gear to make sure you’re (literally) covered.

Even in warmer climes, it’s a good idea to cover yourself. The increased risk of skin melanomas is a real factor. Surfing bare chested is all well and good but the additional reflected glare from the water, combined with the actual rays from the sun, do make this a real risk.
