October half term family surfing & SUP destinations close to home.

The kids may only be just back to school but October half term’s going to roll round quicker than you can blink. And with it being autumn, rather than full on winter, the weather may be playing ball. So here are a few surf locations fairly close to home that would be worth a look if you’re after an eay October half term surfing family getaway. Seasoned surfers will be well aware of what’s mentioned below. But after the COVID years, a little reminder isn’t a bad thing.

France.

Just across the Channel France has a whole load of options when it comes to surfing holidays. Whether accessed by ferry or tunnel it’s easy to get to by car meaning you can take most of your essentials relatively easily.

Depending on Mother Nature’s moods the Cote d’Opale, right on the doorstep of Calais is probably the most accessible. From Wissant to Boulogne you have a variety of breaks to choose from. Granted this area could be blown to bits if low pressure storms are overhead. But if it’s a calmer period of weather you might just score.

Brittany had a load more options, but again, may be cooler on the air temp front and is susceptible to off conditions. A slightly warmer option could be the Vendee which has a few decent waves. Or stump for the well trodden Biarritz destination. Which’ll be much quieter during October than high summer.

Ireland.

The quality of surf that Ireland can get is well publicised. Over on the Atlantic west coast, you have everything from world class breaks to mellower longboard style beaches.

Ireland’s weather isn’t always favourable with bouts of rain and wind common – especially during autumn. Yet with such a diverse and varied coastline, there’s always somewhere sheltered if you’re prepared to have a scout round. If the weather is on point then Ireland can be breathtaking in every manner.

Ireland’s southern coast, from Wexford to West Cork is somewhere that goes under the radar. Yet this stretch is very much worth a look. Headline spots of Tramore and the beaches just outside Kinsale get their fair share of waves. And it isn’t too hard to access. A ferry from Pembroke (Wales) to Rosslare makes getting your loaded vehicle over fairly easy.

The Canary Islands.

Another well trodden surfing location The Canary Islands are varied and diverse. Most likely needing a plane ride to access (although you could drive, but it’s a mission) the Canaries host world class reef setups and mellow beaches to suit every style, taste, mood and level. It’s also consistent for swell.

Lanzarote isn’t known as ‘Europe’s Hawaii’ for nothing. There are some pretty full on setups over on the north shore close to Famara. The island’s opposite coast (north of Costa Teguise) can also fire. With a bunch of cracking points, this could be a real winner for your surfing hols.

The Canary Islands can deliver big on the solid juice front.

Fuerteventura is another often visited island that hosts its own share of world class waves. The infamous northern track carves a rutted path to much quality surf which is echoed right round to the harbour town of Corralejo. The island of Lobos, when it’s firing, is always worth a look.

Fuerte is often windier than Lanza so be prepared for blown out conditions. Mooching about, searching for shelter can yield rewards. Although we appreciate family holidays aren’t always conducive to this. If it’s blowing perhaps try windsurfing, kitesurfing or wing foiling. There are lots of schools and hire centres around Corralejo. With Flag Beach also being another good option for windy sports.

Cornwall.

If you’re determined to stay in the UK our food old, tried and tested Cornwall can be a real treat during autumn. With Momma Nature delivering the goods Kernow can be as good as anywhere. There’s just no guarantee on the weather.

During October half term it may also be busy. But with such a vast coastline to explore you may find your perfect spot.

Cornwall is always worth a look for a few waves. Especially during October.

Of course, NCW is based in Cornwall. And we’re biased as to how good the area we can be. Within a stone’s throw of The Rubber Shack there are a bunch of different spots depending on conditions and skill levels. Further afield you have even more choice, obviously.

Wherever you plump for this October half term it’s worth getting your kids and adult wetsuits/accessories sorted before. That way you’ll be ready to enjoy your holiday as soon as you hit the water.
