Surfing quick dips – tips for the time restricted.

Surfing can be tricky sometimes. In the hectic world we live it gets increasingly difficult to score decent amounts of saltwater time. Work responsibilities, family commitments and a whole plethora of other ‘stuff’ conspire to get in the way of nailing stand out sessions. Add to the mix Mother Nature’s fickle ways – where conditions can change in a heartbeat (whatever Surfline tells us) – and you really need to be on your A-game to maximise what precious little water time you do get. (The same can be said for windsurfing, kitesurfing, or whatever other watersport you subscribe to).

Get stuck into surfing whenever you can.

It’s astounding to see the amount of faffing that goes on pre-session surfing. Hit up any stretch of beach in the UK and chances are you’ll witness groups standing around nattering, drinking cups of tea and generally procrastinating about what’s on offer. This is never going to be an efficient way to maximise the time you have available.

Get stuck into some surfing action when you can.

When a magical forecast pops up, you have a window of opportunity, and it looks good to go make sure you have your kit sorted BEFORE you arrive at the beach. Leashes should be attached to boards, a fresh coat of wax applied to your deck, fins inserted, board already in the van/on the car roof, wetsuit dried and ready to step into (and packed inside your vehicle), booties also dry and waiting for action (also pre-loaded into your transport). It’s the little things that count when making the most of your surf time. Minute details are what causes surfing time to slip away. Before you know it’ll be game over and time to head home. And there’s nothing worse than rocking up to the beach having forgotten an essential item!

Be prepared!

During the run up to a classic surfing session, it’s best to accumulate those brownie points at home or work. Rather than trying to duck out for lackluster waves, hold off and put in some office grind or home chores. This’ll stand you in good stead when the surf’s pumping and will buy you a slightly longer period to enjoy it.

Everything is about compromise these days. Where you were once a carefree grom you now have responsibility. That’s not to say you can’t work things to your advantage. It just means you might not get wet as often as you’d like. But quality over surfing quantity and all that
