Surfing – maximising your time at the beach during winter.

Surfing is on your radar after a window of opportunity has popped up and your calendar’s clear – a day at the beach is calling. Dad might want to snag a few waves (the surf forecast looks good), the kids fancy a spot of roaming and investigating all those rocky nooks and crannies, while mum just wants to relax with a nice latte and soak up some winter sun – the perfect weekend mini break.

Maximising your winter surfing time.

The only fly in the ointment, however, is the temperature. Unfortunately, this isn’t summer any longer and the off season does bring lower mercury levels with chillier air temperatures. So how to maximise your winter surfing time at the beach?

Well, for dad in the surf, it’s easy – a good quality, well-fitting and suitable for purpose winter steamer wetsuit will be the go. (Just as well he purchased a spanking new NCW wetsuit a few weeks ago!). If it’s going to be particularly icy then a decent pair of NCW booties, gloves and hood will help prolong his surf stoke.

Have some warm blankets on hand, maybe a scrummy picnic and snacks – to keep everyone fuelled up and cosy post energetic activities – and you’ll be poised to enjoy a suitably awesome waterside weekend. (If there’s a decent ale house and eatery close by – for après beach shenanigans – with roaring log fire then all the better).

Tooled up with the right NCW wetsuit and ready for action.

Pick your time and there’s nothing wrong with a day (or days) at the beach this winter. What could be better for blowing away the work week haze?

Keeping your family happy at the beach in winter.

The kids will need to be wrapped up warmly – preferably in layers so if they do get too hot and bothered they can be stripped down to cool off. NCW tees and hoodies are great options for keeping your wee ones toasty warm, while fleeces and ski/snowboard jackets will add to the mix nicely. If the sprogs are likely to get damp – splashing in tidal pools is irresistible to kids – it may be worth donning them in waterproof trousers and footwear.

And what of mum? With a latte in hand, a suitably cosy winter coat zipped up for maximum effect and the milky winter sun on her face, she’ll be more than happy to chill and breathe in the salty air. She may even take a dip once dad’s finished, after all surfing isn’t just for blokes!
