Is it time to dust off your watersports gear in readiness for spring

Spring seems still a way off. But trust us when we say the new season will be with us quicker than you think. Much to the relief of many. Winter can be a hard time of year – especially if you enjoy taking a dip. Watersports in winter can be very hit and miss with often many put off by the cold. But with January 2022 coming to an end, February being a short month, and the clocks changing in March it could be time to get prepared and dust off your gear. Warmer, brighter and longer days are just around the corner.

It should be noted, however, that whilst sprint time air temperatures can be on the rise sea temperatures will be at their coldest. You’ll still need thick rubber protection if you plan on some watersports action. Spring can be a time when cold water shock occurs in the unwary. Jumping from warm air to cold water can see the body shut down. It’s a real point to consider. It may feel like summer on land but icy water is what you’ll find in the drink.

Cornish winter walks, crisp blue skies and long shadows.
Not long to go until more weather like this appears.

If you’ve had a winter layoff period from your favourite watersport now’s the time to dig that gear out and start checking it over. Any equipment damage needs to be fixed or else replace what’s broken., Wetsuits in particular can be worn and require repairs or upgrades. Hardware should also be inspected thoroughly though. Not leaving it until that magical spring forecast pops up, only to be sidelined by kit malfunction, is key.

Of course, there’s still time yet for winter to grip tightly once more. But it really isn’t going to be that long until we’re into the swing of sunnier days. At the very least, sorting your gear now will at least allow a little more time to pass whilst waiting for those summer days.
