As cold weather moves in, and the desire to keep stand up paddle boarding remains, it’s worth taking a moment to consider what paddling in the off season means. It goes without saying that mercury levels drop. And with chilly air temperatures comes falling water warmth. Inland locations get much colder than the sea, although taking a dunking in the ocean mid-Feb will cause any rider to gasp!

Attire is therefore important when talking winter SUP. If you haven’t already hauled your winter wetty out then now’s the time to do so. Give it a once over, check for any nicks or rips and get them repaired. Tired, older wetsuits may just need binning completely in favour of something new.

3mm Neoprene Super Stretch front zip SUP wetsuit jacket (unisex fit)
NCW’s 3mm super stretch, front zip neoprene wetsuit jacket’s ideal for fair weather paddling without having to don a full wetsuit. If you take a dunking it’ll keep you toasty and warm. With breeze in effect, the jacket fends off windchill making sessions far comfortable. Note these, being super stretch, are a unisex fit and are very popular with the ladies.
It’s an ideal product for colder sessions, as shown in the photos. It’s also great to keep in your dry-bag if the weather’s changeable. This jacket will keep you snug but has excellent stretch and flex properties for furious sprint paddling over flat water. Safety considerations should be given focus. With less people around in winter, should an alarm need to be raised, a means of communication is worth sorting. A waterproof pouch with mobile phone inside can be (literally) a lifesaver. Carrying a VHF, if you know how to operate another good choice of ‘equipment’ to carry. Extra floatation such as a buoyancy aid could be worth adding as could a back up paddle that can be lashed to your SUP’s deck. Also, more layers of warm clothing, stashed in a dry bag that you can tie down to your stand up paddle board.
All in winter SUP is about being adequately prepared. It can be one of the most fun times of the year, as long as all your ducks are in a row. Get sorted now for maximum fulfillment as the off season wears on.
