Double bubble – maximising your time at the beach part two.

Actually, the title of this post should be: ‘maximising your time in the water’. After all, that’s what’s important when you’re a salt encrusted, rubber wearing water baby.

As a surfer you’re no doubt aware how frustrating it can be rocking up to the beach only to find less than epic conditions. Blown out dribblers are hardly worth getting out of your pit for, let along suiting and booting. For those not fortunate enough to live by the sea it’s even worse. Travelling miles, all for the sake of getting immersed in onshore slop, can be soul destroying.

But there’s a way round this. The solution to almost doubling your time on the brine and maximising your float session count is adopting a second watersport. This allows you to score when surf conditions aren’t ideal. So in this instance we’re probably talking about a windy alternative – but it could be a discipline that takes into account flat days as well.

Wind and kitesurfing are the obvious choices for blowy periods. Both give riders another option to tackle waves – once those all-important skills have been honed. Or switch it on its head and hit up some flat water for a totally contrasting experience to surfing – always refreshing.

Kayaking is a good example of a sport that laps up those onshore wave days. Paddling through the froth, sitting rather than standing, with double blades for added propulsion will have you out back in double quick time, enjoying a few slides on the way in. When it cleans up surfing will once again take front row – like we say double the amount of time in the brine!

Now some of you may be thinking learning a new skill is a bit of a drag. But it doesn’t have to be the case. Technical sports are as such, and require time to get to the level you aspire. But during the interim there can be a lot of fun to be had and as a change from the usual it may be a refreshing change, reinvigorating you for when it’s time to enter the surf zone once again.

And if your mates take the Michael, as they sit on the beach staring forlornly out to sea, simply take comfort that you’re the one having the most fun. Being out in the water is, after all, better than being stuck on the sand – surely?
